July 3rd, 2019 – Recent collaboration between Dubai’s LEORON Institute, the Dubai Government, and the Dubai Youth Council saw the first workshop of the “Future Youth Skills” series – an educational series of events that aims to deliver complimentary training sessions for the youth in the region.
Under the mentorship of LEORON’s Dr. Steyn Heckroodt, attendees to the workshop were given the unique opportunity to tackle cutting-edge techniques that translate into competencies in communication. Organizing parties have agreed to further their efforts in supporting the educational series, with later workshops to equip youth with analytical skills, problem-solving, financial literacy, body language, and lie detection, negotiation, goal planning and more.
Offered primarily in English, FYS series aims to engage the Dubai and Emirati youth, but is opened to the non-Emirati youth as well – without restriction on age and specialty. In addition, organizers put an extra effort at making the sessions accessible for the different types of disabilities, to ensure that participants with disabilities get a fair chance of inclusion.
“The aim is to offer participants theoretical and practical approaches within each skill area. This will enhance the skill-set of the participating groups, and will also support in spreading the culture of soft skills’ development and its importance amongst youth’, said Maryam Belhoul from the Dubai Youth Council.
The initiative is acknowledged by LEORON Institute, encouraging further activities by offering full expert and logistic support. The FYS series is applauded as an attempt to further the organizational vision of empowering youth from the region through education.

About Dubai Youth Council
DYC is a local youth council at the level of the Emirate of Dubai. After the establishment of the Emirates Youth Council (EYC), seven local councils in each emirate were established. The DYC 2019 was established according to The Executive Council resolution number (6) of the year 2019 and under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
Local youth councils serve as an outreach and mobilization team working to raise awareness and encourage participation in surveys, studies, programs, and youth initiatives.
Above all, members of the LYCs serve as role models in engaging, listening to, and inspiring peers across the nation. Accordingly, DYC performs according to a strategy that focuses on 6 main priorities:
- The need to promote a platform that targets youth offers them the room for ideation and contributes to nurturing them with the required future soft skills.
- Enhance academic counseling services at the level of private and public schools, in order to prepare youth for selecting their future specializations.
- Develop outstanding initiative(s) to curb the increase in youth fatalities and severe injuries resulting from car accidents.
- The need for outstanding initiatives and programs to encourage Emirati youth towards marriage and child-bearing.
- Reinstate the traditional aspects of the Emirati neighborhood with further focus on the Emirati folklore in the local social fabric.
- The need to emphasize mental health amongst youth.
