Course Outline

DAY 1
Strategic Thinking for Competitive Advantage

This session works on the strategic thinking abilities of managers. We review some of the key strategic challenges faced in your organizations, especially the entrance of new competitors in this sector. We discuss several tools and frameworks to help us better understand a firm’s success, and how firms can develop a more effective strategy to improve their performance and attain competitive advantage. We will then apply our learning, in order to help participants better understand the root causes of the strategic challenges and to help develop a more effective strategy.

DAY 2
Powering Growth

Companies continuously strive for growth in their existing markets and new areas. In this session, we will explore the fundamental trade-offs and challenges faced when pursuing growth. We will focus on growth in existing markets especially related product markets but also discuss what should guide growth in new areas and new geographic markets. We will explore growth strategies and best practices that managers can implement to pursue growth, as well as means to overcome some of the key challenges to growth.

DAY 3
Executing Strategic Initiatives

In fast changing environments, companies need to not only strategize and innovate to compete effectively, but also to execute their new ideas and initiatives fully and swiftly to survive and prosper. While firm success depends to a large degree on strategy execution, many organizations have difficulty to translate new strategic ideas into reality and manage stakeholder at the same time. In this session, we will explore the challenges to successful strategy execution, and how to overcome them, as well as how to manage stakeholders in the process. Participants will be introduced to a systematic process of execution and implementing strategic initiatives. We will focus on several practical tools that participants can use to effectively drive the execution of strategies in their organizations, including Incentives, Force Field Analysis, Strategy Execution Mapping, Stakeholder Mapping, and Team Onboarding Analysis. We will apply these tools in interactive exercises. We will then practice strategy execution skills in an interactive strategy execution simulation and deepen and extend our learning about effective strategy execution.
